Count Down To Shut Down
Posted On: Aug 224, 2011

The Association of Flight Attendants – CWA is planning a series of nationwide events which will help educate the traveling public about a looming shut down of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  The short term spending fix, passed by the Senate that allowed nearly 75,000 Americans to return to work and to keep airport improvement projects on track, expires on September 16.

AFA-CWA believes that the failure of Congress to pass a clean FAA funding bill is fundamentally flawed and is doing serious harm to federal workers, contractors and construction workers. All because House Republicans' ideological insistence that the FAA Reauthorization bill include a union-busting provision that would create wildly unfair and undemocratic standards for air & rail union elections overseen by the National Mediation Board. When the next “short-term” extension is introduced, after Congress’ five week summer vacation concludes, we fully expect Chairman John Mica to attach a provision mandating the return of draconian voting procedures in airline and railway union elections – the provision that counts all un-cast votes as a “NO”.

Earlier this month, John Mica, the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, told an aviation conference that adding the Essential Air Service (EAS) program cuts to the 21stshort term FAA funding bill was “just a tool: to force the Senate to give in on the union issue. This is evidence of the types of games Republican leaderships is willing to play at the request of one corporate constituent; Delta Airlines.

To keep pressure on Congress for them to do their elected responsibility; negotiate within the Congressional procedures and work out a compromise of a long-term FAA bill, members from AFA and other labor groups will be distributing informational leaflets about the impending shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration.  We will engage the traveling public and, with their support, send this message to Congress; “it is time to stop the political games, get to work and pass a long-term FAA bill that improves aviation infrastructure, grows our economy, and delivers hundreds of thousands of new jobs and keeps elections fair for air and rail employees”.

The nation-wide kick-off of the “Count Down to Shut Down” campaign is Tuesday, August 16. On that day AFA-CWA, along with support from our labor allies, will launch airport activities in Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix and Seattle. Other events will occur throughout month at Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco and Washington DC and additional locations will be added through out the month.

Please check back often as the specific times, locations and local contact information will be posted shortly.
