AFA is part of, Fix the Senate NOW (FTSN), a large coalition urging the Senate to adopt new procedural rules enabling real debate, reducing the number of opportunities a Senator can filibuster the same bill, expediting the confirmation process for Presidential appointments and Judicial nominees and requiring Senators who object to a bill to state their objections publically.
Reforming the filibuster would return the Senate to a body of discussion and debate. Requiring filibustering Senators to speak publicly would ensure that senators who block actions do so only when truly appropriate and within the public eye (senators can currently secretly block bills from being considered).
The three Senators leading the charge, Jeff Merkley (OR), Tom Udall (NM) and Tom Harkin (IA) have introduced S.Res 4 and S.Res 6, which, if adopted, would help restore discussion and debate. We need to build co-sponsor support for these bills.
We are asking AFA members to call their Senators and urge them to cosponsor S.Res’s 4 and 6. We are in a brief window when the senate seems willing to amend its broken rules.
These opportunities are very rare and it’s important that everyone call again and keep calling until the rules are changed.
